Whilst the vast majority of trips to Malaysia are very safe, bar some pickpockets and petty theft, the international community has raised suspicions in recent years of terrorist plots to kidnap tourists on the coastal regions of Eastern Sabah. As a result of these concerns, extra vigilance is advised – or simply avoid these regions. The South of the country saw heavy flooding at the end of 2006 and the cleanup is not yet complete, so it would be wise to check the situation before visiting. Vaccination for a number of diseases – tetanus, tuberculosis, diphtheria, hepatitis A and E – may be required, but are not always necessary: check with a doctor before travelling. Water should be boiled or otherwise sterilised before use, or bought bottled. Meat and fish should be well cooked before consumption, and vegetables and fruit should be peeled and well cooked. Dairy products carry a risk and milk should be boiled before consumption – tinned and powdered milk is available, and is advisable.
